Data Downloads

Data is available as services, downloads by watershed (see webmap below), and other means. See the table below for a summary of data products and current download options by product. Please also visit our map gallery, which is automatically updated as we add services and maps to ArcGIS.com. Thanks to Sonoma County ISD and the Ag. Preservation and Open Space District for hosting services!

If you are looking to download contours for a project area less than 500 acres, use the Contour Clip and Email Tool. If you are looking to download imagery for a project area less than 500 acres, use the Image Clip and Email Tool.

If you are interested in downloading DEMs and hillshades for large portions of the county, we have provided 6 large-area rasters for both the bare earth hillshade and the bare earth DEMs. Those tifs are available here. Also, download compressed MrSID files of the 2013 orthos here (use the "2013 County Aerial MrSID Tiles.pdf" to find your tile). The 2011 orthos are also available as MrSID files here.

For more information on countywide image services, see this blog post.

We are also providing access to all LiDAR data (point cloud and all derivatives) for each of the 9 cities in Sonoma County. These downloads include the 2013 4-band orthophotographs as GeoTiffs (except for the City of Santa Rosa). Please click here to download data for a city.

Data is free and publicly available, but please provide credit for these data when you use them in your work. See this text for how to officially acknowledge the sources of this these data. Also, please let us know how you are using the data!

I'm looking for a LIDAR map that can help me identify old logging roads in the forest area around Black Mountain near Jenner, CA. Can you point me to the map that can help with this?

    Thank you!

      Hi David:
The hillshades will help you identify roads under canopy. These are provided as geotiffs from sonomavegmap.org/data-downloads. You will need GIS software to use these geotiffs.

    Hi,
Do you have the watershed polygons available for download? I would like to use them for clipping rasters generated from your LiDAR data. Thanks.

    Hello,
I am a Ph.D. student from the International Institute for Earth System Science (ESSI) at Nanjing University,P.R.China. By consulting data from Opentopography website, I found out and downloaded some Lidar data and Vegetation and Habitat Map (FileGDB) of Sonoma county. These data providing great support for my research. Thanks for you and your colleagues shared these high-quality and detailed data. Now,I am preparing a paper about my research. It will use small section of overall Lidar data and Vegetation and Habitat Map of Sonoma county.I wonder if you allow me to use these data and vegetation survey data for research and publication. If you permit,I will officially acknowledge the sources of these data in my paper.I'd be look forward to your reply.
    Sincerely yours,
    Bingxiao Wu

Hi, I'm wondering if you or anyone else has created a stream layer from your hydro-flattened DEM? As the NHD stream lines are quite inaccurate, this would be a great service to a number of groups.

    Thanks for any information.

      Hi Cleo:
We are in the process of preparing a number of hydrologic data products for for public distribution. These will include a stream centerline vector layer, watersheds, flow accumulation and flow direction rasters, and a hydro-enforced DEM. All of these datasets will be derived from the 2013 LiDAR. We hope to have these data products available on this web site in the next two weeks.

It's been more than two weeks, and I can't seem to find the hydrologic data on this site. Is there an updated timeline, or am I looking in the wrong place?

We've asked our contractor to do a second round of revisions on the hydrologic data deliverables. They are in the process of completing the revisions and we expect to have final datasets posted by the end of the month.

Any chance the 2013 orthos will be available with a clip tool? It would be great to avoid the SIDS headache. They used to be available in jp2 tiles from the usgs website, but now all they have are 2011 1 meter resolution tiles.

Jason - (if you are still listening!) You can uncompress MrSID imagery using a free tool downloadable from LizardTech. See http://www.lizardtech.com/downloads/category/#tools__utilities
I have used the command line utilities to convert MrSID to georeferenced TIFF.

MrSID can deliver very high compression (40:1) so run the utility on a machine with lots of RAM and enough disk space to hold the decompressed images.

If you use GDAL http://gdal.org/ then you can process MrSID files there too. It requires downloading the MrSID SDK from the above link. Using GDAL would let you take the MrSID file directly into lots of other raster formats. (Currently it supports 138 formats)

    Hope this helps -- Brian

The contour clip and email viewer utility does not work properly when producing 2010 .dwg's. The contours do not come in with proper elevation, nor are they indexed properly (i.e. Z=3.67). Will this be resolved?

I would like to use the LiDAR contour data in conjunction with the MrSID Orthophotos, since I am assuming that both are georeferenced. It seems that the MrSID orthophoto is very large (1.2 GB), yet only 1 foot wide when xref'd into autocad. Obviously the image is compressed..... How do I uncompress it to use with countours, and maintain its georeferenced integrity?

Hi Jason: we don't work much in the CAD world over here - we're a pure GIS shop. I wish I had an answer for you. Maybe another engineer or CAD person will chime in with an answer to your question.

Hi Ben - thanks for your question. We don't have the point cloud available at this time in ASCII format. However, any day now the Sonoma County LiDAR data will be available on OpenTopography. From OpenTopograpy, you will have the option of downloading the data in ASCII format.

What I am concerned with is being able to differentiate between all of the different points, ground, veg, building, etc. If that information is included in the ASCII file I can filter them based on that.

    Hello,
We are working on a vineyard project that would be perfect for using aerial contours on 18450 Rockpile Road in Geyserville. We tried downloading your contour data and could only get it to open with ArcMap GIS software. We use AutoCad Civil 3d software for our plans. The files we downloaded were very large, around 2gb+ range and in we were wondering what the best way to convert those contours or export them into Autocad software since the file is so large it will crash ArcMap multiple times when trying to do anything. Please let us know if you know of any way of making this data more usable. Thanks!

Thanks Isaiah - the 1 foot contours are a challenge due to their sheer size (as a result of the massive numbers of features). We are working on coming up with a more elegant means of distribution for the contours, in the form of a viewer that allows the user to select a size-limited area of interested and obtain the LiDAR and Ortho products via an email link. We're calling this the "Clip and Email" viewer.

In the meantime, if you email your specific area of interest as a shapefile, kmz, or ESRI feature class, we can clip the contours to just the area that you need and provide you with just this area as .gdb and a shapefile. Hopefully this will be smaller than the entire area of contours that your are trying to work with.
